Community Outreach
“…whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for me” Matthew 25:40 New International Version
At Good Shepherd, we are committed to serving not just our members but the community in which Good Shepherd was planted. We serve not because we expect any type of reward, but because we are called to help those around us. Our commitment has shown itself in many ways, some of which are:
- The Lansing Blind Mission: Monthly home cooked meal, fellowship, speakers and music for visually impaired people from the Greater Lansing area. A brief devotional is provided for guests who wish to participate. While this is a Mission of the Church, all visually impaired guests are welcome.
- Free Bi-weekly Community Dinners: 2nd and 4th Tuesday. Home cooked meals are provided on a drive-thru basis. Volunteers and donations are welcome!
- Quilt Mission: Each year our quilters hand make between 100-150 quilts that are donated to local charities and worldwide through Lutheran World Relief. Fabric and clean sheets for quilt backing are always needed.
- Christmas collection for EVE, the Ingham County Domestic Violence Shelter: Providing Christmas gifts for women and children who have escaped domestic violence and who would otherwise have nothing to celebrate Christmas.
- Back to school clothing and supplies collections for local schools: Helping kids get off to a good start to the school year. We all remember how important that first impression can be.
- Periodic donation of healthy snacks for local schools.
- Northwest Lutheran Food Bank: Joint effort with Grace Lutheran to provide food and staffing to help people experiencing food insecurity.
- Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Baskets: Provide all the fixings for joyous holiday dinners for people in need.
- Harvest dinner for about 100 International students from MSU’s Friendship House: For many of the students, it is their first experience with a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
- Winter coat, hat and glove collections: For distribution through the City Rescue Mission.
- Lutheran World Relief School Kits: Collected 30 backpacks filled with school supplies for distribution to countries throughout the world.
- Other projects to respond to one time or new community needs.
